Family Day Care Pool Owners

Following the tragic death of two-year-old toddler Lachlan at the home of one of its Family Day Care Educators, community service provider Communicare has taken steps to further reinforce safety for children being cared for by Family Day Care Educators with swimming pools.

The National Law does not prohibit family day care educators from having swimming pools. Any provider in a home with a swimming pool must ensure that the pool complies with Australian standards and State regulations for pools, fencing and gates and abide by a water safety policy.

CEO Melissa Perry said that of the network of 63 Educators it supports to provide in-home family day care services across Perth, 10 owned swimming pools.

“By Monday afternoon we will have made one-on-one visits with this group of 10 Educators to reinforce the importance of water safety measures around pools,” Ms Perry said.

“Within two weeks, we will have visited all remaining Educators to ensure their wellbeing in the wake of this terrible tragedy. They are a very tight-knit group and what happened to Lachlan and their fellow Educator has impacted them greatly.”

Ms Perry said she had also been in discussions with the State Government on working with them to address any issues when the findings of the coronial inquest are released.

Communicare has provided support for Family Day Care Educators throughout the Western Australian community for over 35 years, with Educators registered to care for children aged from birth to 12 years 11 months.

All education and care services in Western Australia are covered by the Education and Care Services National Law (WA) Act 2012 Education and Care Services National Regulations 2012. Family Day Care Educators provide care in their homes or approved venue under a service operated by an approved provider, in this instance Communicare Inc.
